After reading Why Social Networking will get Worse by John Robb on Medium, I saw a different point of view on the concept of Social Networks. In Robb’s article, he argues about Facebook and how they are fixing significant problems with their newsfeed. He states, “Facebook is actively micromanaging the information flow and social interactions of over 2 billion people, and insanely complex and highly uncertain task.” He explains how the problems with Facebook’s newsfeed won’t really get fixed with these tweaks, but worse as they attempt to fix them. Robb explains about a time he worked with a software company that launched a social networking product and how the company always had a central discussion about how to organize the newsfeed. Robb explains how Facebook’s news feed has become a chaotic soup yielding unpredictable outcomes.
Although I do somewhat agree that Facebook’s newsfeed is a chaotic soup, I don’t believe it will get worse. Social Networks are still new in a sense, at least the social media we are consuming today. Facebook is one of the top social networks right now, especially since they bought Instagram. Since they are getting these new social networks attached to their brand in a way, it can be hard to figure out what the user might want to see on their newsfeed. Since they do use an algorithm that needs to be changed here and there, it’s absurd to say that their newsfeed will get worse. Technology is always changing and so will the newsfeed until Facebook can find the one that works for all. Most social networks try to cater to the user of the platform by using the algorithm within their website to put specific things on their feed.
This debate is important because technology will continue to evolve into this massive thing at some time in the future, so we should’ be saying that it will be getting worse when it’s not even at its fullest potential. For example, in another medium article called “Evolving the Facebook Newsfeed to serve you better” https://medium.com/facebook-design/evolving-the-facebook-news-feed-to-serve-you-better-f844a5cb903d Shali Ngyuen and Ryan Freitas discuss how the Facebook Newsfeed improvements can help the user better. I feel like Robb is only seeing this one issue Facebook is having with the Newsfeed and not understanding Social Networks evolve every day to become the next Google or Facebook, but they still do listen to their user’s complaints and take that into account as they are working on the next algorithm. In conclusion, social networks have their flaws but they are still in a sense in the beta stage of this whole social network soar. It takes time to figure out the right thing for anything a person wants to do well. Facebook’s Newsfeed might look like soup to Robb, but to another user, it’s just the beginning of something great.
