How to get a remote developer job?

Laptop lifestyle, complete freedom over your schedule, more time for the things that you love.

These are some of the benefits that a remote job brings.

Irene, today I will share the exact path I went through to get the remote developer job.

Why remote?

I tried working both:

Remote
In the office

And I'm 100% sure that I don't want to be working in the office anymore.

A remote job gives you so much freedom over your day.

If it's a nice weather you can just go for a walk and grab a cup of nice coffee.

If you feel overwhelmed you can take a break.

You can do half of the job in the morning, and finish it in the evening.

IMPORTANT: Working remotely doesn't mean being lazy, unproductive, and hanging around all day long.

The opposite.

Because nobody is constantly watching you, and you work only when you feel like working, you train your self-responsibility and tend to get even more things done.

Of course remote work has its downsides, but for me, the freedom it brings is worth everything, so let's break down how to get a remote job in IT.

1 - Getting Good

A remote job is something that a lot of people want.

So companies turned it into a benefit.

And the more valuable employee you are, the more benefits you are getting.

So step 1 is pretty straightforward.

You need to get good at coding.

And getting good doesn't mean selling your soul or becoming the next Mark "Cucumber".

You just need to:

Learn 1 tech stack on a good level and build a good portfolio around it
Practice for interviews (both technical and soft ones)
Confidently present yourself to the company on the interview

And trust me, that actually works.

I was able to negotiate a fully remote position as a Junior Developer in a non-remote company just because I presented myself well in the interview.

You can do the same if you will be just consistent with studying and practicing.

2 - Searching for the right companies

No matter how good you are, if you work in a huge corporation and they have a rule that you have to work in the office -> there is not a lot of what you can do about it.

That’s why I’m a huge fan of smaller companies (below 300 employees) and startups.

There everything is just way more flexible. Everything is moving way faster

AND

what is most important for us, you can negotiate better conditions for yourself, like remote work.

So when you gonna be looking for a job, consider choosing smaller companies over corporations.

3 - Organise your life

After getting a remote job, people are making 2 common mistakes:
Getting lazy and regressing
Overworking and burning out

So you need to find a golden middle, to keep working hard to skyrocket your career.

But at the same time taking small breaks for family & friends, travelling and recovering to prevent burnout.

But at the very end, if you truly love what you are doing, it’s very hard to burn out.

Conclusion

Getting remote job requires a lot of initial hard work.

But it brings a lot of freedom and control to your life, so I think it’s worth the effort.

And it’s not that impossible.

You just need to learn an online skill like programming, get good at it, and find a company that accepts remote positions.
