How to make more as a developer?

You would probably like to make more money?

And who wouldn't?

As our salary grows, so do our wishes and goals.

On $1k per month, you want to buy a new iPhone, when on $10k you want a new car, and on $100k a luxury house.

So how can you actually make more money, if you are a developer?
Let's break down all the things that worked well personally for me.

When should you think about money?

It's crucial to understand that as a developer you are going through 2 seasons:
Learning Season
Earning Season

In the learning season, you should focus on working as hard as possible and learning as fast as you can.

When you gonna get to the Earning season, you should still keep learning, but now besides that, you should think about getting promotions, changing jobs, doing freelance, etc.

In this email, we will focus on actions that you should take during the Earning Season, assuming that you already passed the learning season.

1 Getting Promotion

It's crazy how many good developers receive the same salary for years, just because they do not want to ask for a promotion.

But nobody will give you a promotion, you have to go and GET IT.

Don't expect that your boss will come to you and say:
Irene, I see how well are your working. That's why from tomorrow your salary will be increased by $2000 per month.

LOL!

That will never happen.

So as the step 0, you should actually work well and build a good reputation in the company, and then you need to go to someone and ask for a promotion.

In the worst-case scenario, they will say no, and NOTHING WILL CHANGE.

So you aren't losing anything by trying.

And if you gonna get "no", you can move on to the second step.

2 Changing a Job

This is one of the most profitable ways to increase your income.

Because promotions are usually in the range of 10%-40% of your current salary.

By changing a job your income can grow by 100% or even more!

Moreover, this is almost risk-free, as you don't have to leave your current job.

You can just apply for new jobs in your free time, and you will leave your current one, ONLY WHEN YOU'LL GET THE NEW OFFER.

This is literally a money glitch.

You spend 20-40 minutes a day applying for jobs, and 1-2 hours a week attending interviews.

And by doing that you can double your salary overnight.

NOTE: Don't change jobs every 3 months, as it will look strange.

But if you've been sitting in the same position for a year, and want to grow, this is the best thing you can do.

3 Extra Job / Freelance

If you recently changed a job, but after 3 months got used to the new salary and want to start making more, I understand you!

I also was in the same situation.

It's too early to change a job or not the right time to ask for a promotion, but you want to keep growing.

In that case, you can consider taking extra freelance projects or getting a second part or full-time job.

But be very careful with that, do it only if you are ready to work x2 more.

And if you gonna notice that your performance on the main job drops, STOP DOING IT IMMEDIATELY.

You can always make more money, but recovering your reputation is very hard.

So always prioritise doing your work well, over making more.

In the long term, doing your job well will bring you way more money than a temporary freelance project.

4 Side hustle

You can launch your own business or an app that will be making you some extra money.

As a developer you can do it almost for free, as you can actually build everything yourself, you don't need to hire other devs.

But this is the topic for a whole separate email, so I don't want to waste your time by giving trivial advice like: "Work hard, validate your idea, learn marketing, etc.".

Maybe we will cover it in one of the next emails, let me know if you want to learn more about starting a business as a developer.

Conclusion

There are a lot of ways how to make more money as a programmer.

There is SO MUCH MONEY in this industry, so if you want to make more, YOU WILL.

And before complaining about your situation, ask yourself a question:
Have you done everything to improve your position in life?

If the answer is "NO", keep going, and you can start with the ways that I shared with you today.

I've done all those things above MYSELF, and it was progressively improving my position, and skills and was helping me to grow.

QUESTION FOR YOU

Before we finish, I have a quick question for you!
What questions/difficulties do you currently have about IT/starting an IT/programming career?

Let me know by replying to this email, and next week I'll answer some of those questions!
