You have 2 paths in coding

Career Path

The most obvious path that most people think about is a career path, a.k.a:You learn
You get a job
You work and get a monthly salary

And that's a great and pretty safe path for any industry.

To maximise your chances of succeeding within the career path focus on those 2 KEY things.

Build cool projects

The only thing that proves what you are capable of and what you can do as a developer ARE YOUR PROJECTS.

Most beginners have sh*tty boring projects, so by building something really professional you can stand out.

Build connections

With a good project, you'll be able to prove what you are capable of.

But if you don't know anyone in the industry, it'll be hard to find people who'll check out your projects and hire you.

That's why you should focus on building useful connections as early as possible.

You can do this by connecting with people on LinkedIn/X, doing internships, attending meetups/conferences, etc.

Business Path

Another way to succeed in programming can be building your own business.

Instead of looking for a job, you'll create a job for yourself !

Here you can leverage your coding skills and AI to build an app/website that will solve a certain problem, and you'll charge people for using it.

Here you should also focus on 2 key things:

Marketing

Nobody cares about your app.

So you have to share it with as many people as you can and prove to them that it's worth using it and paying for it.

The best distribution channel right now is short-form content (TikTok, Reels, Shorts).

With short content, you can reach millions of people for free.

Product

Even with good marketing, if your app is sh*t nobody will pay for it, and you won't be able to build a sustainable business.

So focus on talking with your customers and improving your product based on feedback.

Maybe you'll find out that people do not use your app in the way that you've imagined, so don't be scared to change your app completely over time.

Compared to a career the main benefit of the business is that it's fully yours and you can infinitely scale it. But of course, it involves some risks and nobody guarantees you a monthly salary.

Conclusion

It doesn't matter what path you choose, both will require a lot of hard work and dedication.

But the longer you stick around, the higher your chances of succeeding.

Moreover, why not try both?

You can try to build your app as a business and even if it fails you'll have a really great project for the portfolio that you can use to get a job.
